uPVC Door Lock Replacement Costs: What You Will Actually Pay

uPVC doors are the most common external door in Coventry — and across the UK. They are also the most common reason people call me. Whether your door will not lock, the handle is floppy, or you just want to upgrade the security, this guide covers every cost involved.

I am Ross, a local locksmith based in Coventry. Every price below is what I actually charge — including the part, the fitting, and any disposal. No call-out fee. No VAT. No hidden extras.

Understanding Your uPVC Door Lock

Before we get into costs, it helps to understand what is inside your uPVC door. There are several components that work together, and knowing which one has failed (or needs upgrading) determines what the job costs.

The Euro Cylinder

This is the lock barrel — the part your key goes into. It sits in the middle of the door at handle height, held in place by a single screw on the edge of the door. The euro cylinder is the most frequently replaced part because:

  • It is the primary security point (and the one burglars target with lock snapping)
  • It wears out over time, making the key stiff or hard to turn
  • It is the cheapest and easiest part to upgrade
  • The Multipoint Locking Mechanism (Gearbox)

This is the long metal strip that runs vertically along the edge of the door. When you lift the handle and turn the key, the mechanism engages hooks, rollers, or deadbolts at several points along the door. It is called "multipoint" because it locks at multiple points — typically three to five.

The mechanism contains the gearbox, which is the part that converts the handle movement into locking point engagement. When people say "the gearbox has gone," they mean this component has failed internally.

    The Handle Set

The handles on both sides of the door operate the multipoint mechanism. They connect through the door via a square spindle. Handles can become loose, floppy, or snap — but they are usually the cheapest fix.

    The Hinges

uPVC doors use flag hinges that allow the door to be adjusted up, down, in, and out. Misaligned hinges can make the door hard to lock and put extra strain on the mechanism.

Cost Breakdown: Every uPVC Door Lock Component

    Euro Cylinder Only: From £59

This is the most common job I do. The euro cylinder is the part most likely to need replacing, and it is also the simplest and cheapest.

    What is included:

  • Anti-snap euro cylinder (correct size for your door)
  • Fitting and testing
  • Old cylinder disposal
  • 3 keys
  • When you need this:

  • Key is stiff or hard to turn
  • You want to upgrade from a standard cylinder to anti-snap
  • You have moved house and want new keys ([moving house lock change guide](/blog/moving-house-change-locks))
  • You have lost your keys and want to ensure old keys no longer work
  • What affects the price:

  • Cylinder length (must be measured precisely — see our [measuring guide](/blog/how-to-measure-euro-cylinder-upvc))
  • Security level (basic anti-snap vs premium brands like Ultion or ABS)
  • Thumbturn option (key on outside, thumbturn on inside — popular for fire safety)
  • A basic anti-snap cylinder starts at £59. A premium Ultion or ABS cylinder starts at £89. Both prices include fitting.

    Gearbox / Mechanism Replacement: From £89 - £200

This is the bigger job. When the multipoint mechanism fails internally, the whole strip needs replacing. You cannot repair a broken gearbox — it has to be swapped for a new one.

    What is included:

  • Replacement multipoint mechanism (matched to your door)
  • Fitting, alignment, and testing at all locking points
  • Old mechanism disposal
  • When you need this:

  • Handle lifts but the locking points do not engage
  • The key turns but the door does not lock
  • You can hear grinding or crunching when operating the handle
  • The mechanism has jammed and the door will not open (emergency situation)
  • Why the price range is wide (£89 - £200):

There are dozens of different multipoint mechanisms made by different manufacturers. They are not interchangeable — the replacement must match the original in several measurements:

  • **Backset** — the distance from the edge of the door to the centre of the cylinder hole (typically 35mm or 45mm)
  • **Centres** — the distance from the cylinder hole to the handle spindle hole (usually 72mm or 92mm)
  • **Overall length** — the full length of the mechanism strip
  • **Locking point type** — hooks, rollers, mushrooms, or a combination
  • **Brand compatibility** — different brands use different hook/roller positions
  • Common mechanism brands include:

  • **Mila** — very common in UK uPVC doors, parts widely available, mid-range pricing
  • **Yale** — another common brand, good parts availability
  • **GU (Gretsch-Unitas)** — German-made, tends to be more expensive but very reliable
  • **Lockmaster** — a universal brand designed to replace multiple original mechanisms, often the most cost-effective option
  • **Fuhr** — common in older uPVC doors, parts can be harder to source
  • **Winkhaus** — good quality, mid to upper pricing
  • I carry the most common mechanisms in my van. For unusual or discontinued brands, I may need to order — but I will tell you this on the phone.

How to Identify Your Mechanism Brand

Before you call, you can check the brand of your mechanism yourself:

  • **Look at the faceplate** — the thin metal strip visible on the edge of the door when it is open. The brand name is usually stamped on it
  • **Check the handle** — some brands stamp their name on the handle backplate
  • **Take a photo** — if you cannot read the markings, take a photo of the door edge with the faceplate visible and send it to me on 07735 336175. I can usually identify the mechanism from a photo
  • Full Multipoint Lock Swap: From £150 - £250

Sometimes the mechanism, the cylinder, and the handles all need replacing at the same time. This is common when:

  • The door is 15+ years old and everything is worn
  • The mechanism has failed and damaged the cylinder in the process
  • You want a complete upgrade of the door's security
  • What is included:

  • New multipoint mechanism
  • New euro cylinder (anti-snap)
  • New handle set (if needed)
  • Full fitting, alignment, and testing
  • All old parts disposal
  • This is the most comprehensive uPVC door lock job, and the price reflects the number of components involved. On the higher end (£200-£250), you are typically looking at a premium mechanism brand and a high-security cylinder.

    Handle Set Replacement: From £39

A loose, floppy, or broken handle is often the cheapest fix on a uPVC door. In many cases it is just the handle that has failed — the mechanism behind it is fine.

    What is included:

  • New handle set (both sides)
  • Fitting and testing
  • Old handles disposal
  • Common handle problems:

  • Handle drops down and does not spring back up — usually a broken return spring in the handle or the mechanism
  • Handle is loose and wobbly — may be a worn spindle or loose fixing screws
  • Handle snapped off — more common with cheaper plastic handles
  • Note: if the handle drops and the problem is in the mechanism (not the handle itself), you may need a gearbox replacement instead. I will diagnose this when I arrive and always confirm the cost before starting work.

    Hinge Adjustment: From £39

uPVC door hinges can be adjusted to fix alignment problems. Over time, heavy doors sag, and the locking points stop engaging properly because the door is not sitting square in the frame.

    What is included:

  • Assessment of door alignment
  • Adjustment of all hinges (typically 3 flag hinges)
  • Testing of all locking points after adjustment
  • Signs your door needs adjusting:

  • The door catches on the frame at the top or bottom
  • You have to lift the handle very hard to get it to lock
  • The door does not sit flush in the frame when closed
  • Draughts around the door edge (the seal is not compressing evenly)
  • A hinge adjustment often solves "locking problems" that are actually alignment problems. It is worth trying this before replacing the mechanism.

    Door Realignment: From £49

Realignment is a more involved version of hinge adjustment. It may involve:

  • Adjusting all hinges for height, width, and compression
  • Adjusting or replacing the keep plates (the metal plates in the frame that the locking points engage with)
  • Shimming hinges to correct a leaning door
  • Adjusting the door's position in the frame to ensure even seal compression
  • This is common on doors that were fitted a long time ago, or doors that have been affected by building settlement.

When You Need the Whole Mechanism vs Just a Cylinder

This is the question I get asked most often. Here is a simple way to think about it:

You probably just need a cylinder if:

  • The key is stiff but the handle and locking points work fine
  • You want to upgrade security (anti-snap)
  • You have moved house and want new keys
  • The key has snapped inside the lock
  • You probably need the mechanism if:

  • The handle lifts but nothing locks
  • You hear grinding when operating the handle
  • Locking points are stuck in the locked or unlocked position
  • The door is jammed shut and will not open
  • You might need both if:

  • The door is old and everything is worn
  • The mechanism failure has damaged the cylinder
  • You are doing a full security upgrade
  • When you call me on 07735 336175, I will ask you a few questions about the symptoms and give you my best assessment of what is needed — and the likely cost — before I set off. If I arrive and find it is a different problem to what we discussed, I will explain and get your approval before doing anything.

Getting the Best Value on uPVC Door Lock Work

  • **Do not ignore early warning signs** — a stiff key or a handle that needs extra force are signs of wear. Fixing a small problem early (£39-£59) prevents a bigger failure later (£150+)
  • **Upgrade the cylinder while I am there** — if I am already working on your door, adding an anti-snap cylinder upgrade is cheaper than a separate visit
  • **Regular maintenance extends the life of your mechanism** — see our [uPVC door maintenance guide](/blog/upvc-door-maintenance-guide)
  • **Get a price on the phone before booking** — I always give a firm quote upfront. If a locksmith will not do this, consider it a warning sign

    Frequently Asked Questions

How much does it cost to replace a uPVC door lock mechanism?

A uPVC door multipoint mechanism replacement costs from £89 to £200, depending on the brand and type. Common brands like Mila and Yale tend to be at the lower end, while GU and some discontinued mechanisms cost more. My prices include the mechanism, fitting, and testing — no call-out fee and no VAT. If you also need a new cylinder and handles at the same time, a full lock swap runs from £150 to £250.

How do I know if I need a new mechanism or just a new cylinder?

If your key is stiff but the handle and locking points work normally, you probably just need a new cylinder (from £59). If the handle lifts but nothing engages, or you hear grinding when you operate the lock, the mechanism has likely failed (from £89-£200). A stiff door that is hard to lock could be an alignment issue (from £39-£49 for adjustment) rather than a lock problem at all. Call me on 07735 336175 and I will help you diagnose it over the phone.

Can I replace the uPVC door lock mechanism myself?

Technically yes, but I would not recommend it unless you are experienced with door hardware. The main challenges are: identifying the exact replacement mechanism (there are dozens of types and they are not interchangeable), getting the measurements right (backset, centres, overall length, locking point positions), and fitting it without damaging the door. If you order the wrong mechanism, you cannot return it once you have tried to fit it. The fitting cost with me is modest compared to the risk of buying the wrong part.

Why are some uPVC door mechanisms so much more expensive than others?

The price difference comes down to brand, availability, and type. Common mechanisms from brands like Mila, Yale, and Lockmaster are widely available and competitively priced. German-made mechanisms from GU or Winkhaus tend to cost more but are very reliable. Discontinued mechanisms from older door manufacturers can be expensive because they are harder to source — in these cases, a Lockmaster universal mechanism is often the most cost-effective replacement option.
