How Emergency Locksmith Call-Outs Actually Work (What to Expect)

If you have never called a locksmith before, you probably have no idea what to expect. How much will it cost? Will they damage the door? How do I know they are legitimate? Will they try to upsell me?

I get it. You are already stressed — you are locked out, it is cold, and you just want to get inside. The last thing you need is uncertainty about the process.

So let me walk you through exactly what happens when you call me, step by step. No mystery, no surprises.

---

Step 1: You Call — I Answer Personally

When you call **07735 336175**, you get me. Not a call centre. Not an answering service. Not a national company who will then try to find a locksmith in your area (and charge you a premium for the referral).

I am Ross, a local independent locksmith based in Coventry. I answer my own phone, and if for some reason I cannot answer immediately (because I am elbow-deep in a lock mechanism on another job), I will call you back within minutes.

This matters because call centres are one of the biggest sources of locksmith scams in the UK. You call a number, they quote one price, and then a random person turns up and charges double. With me, the person on the phone is the person who turns up. Same person, same price.

Step 2: I Ask What Has Happened and Which Lock Type

I will ask you a few quick questions:

  • **What has happened?** Locked out? Key snapped? Lock not working? Burglary? This tells me what tools and parts I might need.
  • **What type of door is it?** uPVC, composite, wooden? This affects the approach.
  • **What type of lock?** Euro cylinder? Mortice deadlock? Yale nightlatch? Multi-point mechanism? If you do not know, that is absolutely fine — most people do not. I can usually work it out from a photo if you can send one via text or WhatsApp.
  • **Where are you?** I need your address to give you an accurate ETA. I cover all of Coventry and surrounding areas including [Kenilworth](/areas/kenilworth), [Bedworth](/areas/bedworth), [Nuneaton](/areas/nuneaton), and across Warwickshire.
  • Step 3: I Give You a Firm Price on the Phone

Before I set off, I tell you exactly what it will cost. Not a range. Not "from" a number. A specific price for the job you have described.

For a standard lockout (locked out, no damage, no lock replacement needed), the price is from **£59**. I will tell you the exact figure based on the time of day, your location, and the lock type.

This is a **fixed price**. If I arrive and the job takes me 5 minutes or 25 minutes, the price is the same. You agreed to a number, and that is what you pay.

The only time the price changes is if I arrive and discover the situation is different from what was described — for example, if the lock is damaged and needs replacing rather than just opening. If that happens, I will explain what I have found, give you a new price for the additional work, and get your agreement before I do anything. You are never surprised by a bill.

For a full breakdown of costs for every type of job, see the [prices page](/prices).

Step 4: I Give You an ETA

For most locations within Coventry, my arrival time is **15-30 minutes**. I will give you a specific estimate based on where I am and where you are.

If I am on another job and it will be longer, I tell you upfront. I would rather be honest about a 45-minute wait than promise 15 minutes and leave you standing in the cold wondering where I am.

I will text you when I am on my way so you know I am coming.

Step 5: I Arrive and Check Your ID

This is important, and it is one of the signs that you have called a legitimate locksmith.

Before I open any door, I need to verify that you live at the property. I will ask for **proof of address** — a driving licence, utility bill, bank statement, or any official document showing your name at that address. A photo on your phone of a document is fine.

If you do not have ID on you (because it is inside the house you are locked out of), I will work with you to establish identity another way. A neighbour who knows you, a photo of you inside the house on your phone, a car registered at the address — there are always ways to verify.

I know this can feel frustrating when you are cold and just want to get inside. But any locksmith who opens a door without checking who they are opening it for is a risk to your safety and everyone else's. If I opened your door for anyone who asked, how would you feel?

Step 6: I Assess the Lock and Confirm the Approach

Before I touch anything, I look at the lock and the door to confirm the best approach. Most lockouts can be resolved non-destructively — meaning no damage to the lock or door.

I will tell you what I am going to do. For example:

  • "This is a standard euro cylinder on a uPVC door. I am going to pick it open. It should take about 10 minutes and there will be no damage."
  • "This is a mortice deadlock. I am going to use a bypass technique to open it without damaging the lock."
  • "This cylinder is damaged — it looks like it has been tampered with. I will need to snap it to open the door, and then fit a new one."
  • If the approach changes the cost (for example, if a cylinder needs replacing), I tell you the new price and get your agreement before proceeding.

Step 7: I Open the Door

This is the bit that usually surprises people — how quick it is.

For a standard euro cylinder lockout, I can typically gain entry in **5-20 minutes** using non-destructive techniques. Mortice locks can take a bit longer. Highly secure locks (Ultion, ABS, high-security mortice) take longer still because they are designed to resist manipulation — which is a good thing.

I work quietly and methodically. There is no drama, no forcing, no kicking of doors. If you have ever seen a locksmith in a film, forget everything you saw. Real locksmithing is more like surgery than demolition.

Step 8: If the Lock Needs Replacing, I Quote Before Starting

If the lock is damaged (either from the lockout or from a previous issue), or if you want to upgrade while I am there, I will give you a separate quote for the replacement.

    Common scenarios:

  • The euro cylinder was snapped to gain entry and needs replacing — from **£59** for a standard cylinder, from **£89** for an anti-snap upgrade
  • You want to upgrade to an [anti-snap cylinder](/services/lock-change) while I am here — this is actually the perfect time to do it
  • The lock mechanism was already worn or damaged, which caused the lockout in the first place — I can diagnose and quote for repair or replacement
  • I carry the most common replacement locks, cylinders, and mechanisms in my van. If I have the right part, I can do the replacement on the spot. If I need to order a specific part (unusual sizes, specific brands), I will arrange a return visit.

Step 9: You Pay and I Give You a Receipt

Payment is simple. I accept **card and cash**. Contactless, chip and pin, Apple Pay, Google Pay — whatever works for you.

You get a **receipt** with a full breakdown of the work done, parts fitted, and cost. Keep this — it is useful for insurance purposes and serves as your guarantee documentation.

What I Carry in My Van

People sometimes ask how I can handle so many different situations from a van. Here is what I carry:

  • **Lock picks** — a full set of manual picks and tension tools for various lock types
  • **Decoders** — tools that read the internal configuration of a lock without damaging it
  • **Euro cylinder snapping tools** — for controlled removal of damaged or compromised cylinders
  • **Replacement euro cylinders** — standard, anti-snap, and high-security in the most common sizes
  • **Mortice lock replacement sets** — 5-lever BS3621 deadlocks in standard sizes
  • **Yale nightlatches** — for replacement on wooden doors
  • **uPVC multipoint lock mechanisms** — the most common gearbox types
  • **Handles, screws, fixings** — all the small parts that complete a job
  • **Boarding up materials** — marine-grade plywood for emergency [boarding up](/services/boarding-up) after break-ins
  • **Drilling equipment** — for last-resort destructive entry when non-destructive methods are not possible

Why Legitimate Locksmiths Ask for ID

I touched on this earlier, but it is worth expanding because some people find it annoying or suspicious.

A locksmith who opens a door without verifying the occupant is putting people at risk. If I opened doors for anyone who claimed to live there, I would be a gift to burglars, stalkers, and anyone with bad intentions.

The ID check is there to protect **you**. It means that no one can call me to open your door unless they can prove they live there. It is a sign that you have called a professional who takes their responsibilities seriously.

If a locksmith turns up and does not ask for any identification at all, that should concern you more than one who does.

Red Flags: Signs of a Rogue Locksmith

While I am on the subject, here are the warning signs that you have called the wrong locksmith:

  • **They will not give you a price on the phone.** "I need to see the lock first" is sometimes legitimate, but most standard lockouts can be quoted over the phone. If they refuse, be cautious.
  • **The price changes when they arrive.** If you were quoted £59 and they ask for £150 after opening the door, that is a scam.
  • **They do not ask for ID.** As I explained above, this is a red flag.
  • **They arrive in an unmarked van.** Legitimate locksmiths have their details on their vehicle.
  • **They cannot show you any credentials.** I am happy to show my identification and credentials to any customer who asks.
  • **They drill the lock immediately without trying non-destructive entry.** Drilling is a last resort. If they jump straight to it, they may not have the skills for non-destructive entry — and they will charge you for a new lock on top.

    Frequently Asked Questions

How long does it take a locksmith to open a locked door?

For a standard euro cylinder lockout (the most common type in Coventry, fitted to most uPVC and composite doors), non-destructive entry typically takes 5-20 minutes. Mortice deadlocks on wooden doors can take 10-30 minutes depending on the lock grade. High-security locks like Ultion or ABS take longer because they are specifically designed to resist picking and manipulation — which is exactly why they are good locks. In rare cases where non-destructive entry is not possible, I may need to drill the cylinder, which takes about 5 minutes but means the cylinder needs replacing.

What if I have no ID because everything is locked inside my house?

This is extremely common and nothing to worry about. I have several alternative ways to verify you live at the property: a neighbour who can vouch for you, photos on your phone taken inside the property, vehicle registration at the address, a delivery app showing your address, or even post visible through the letterbox with your name on it. I am not trying to make things difficult — I just need to satisfy myself that I am letting the right person in. In years of doing this I have always been able to verify identity one way or another.

Do you charge extra for evening or weekend call-outs?

I operate the same pricing structure 24/7. The price I quote on the phone is the price you pay, whether it is 2pm on a Tuesday or 2am on a Saturday. Some locksmiths charge premium rates for unsociable hours — I do not, because lockouts do not happen on a schedule. The price depends on the lock type and the work involved, not the time of day. Call 07735 336175 any time.

Will you damage my door or lock when opening it?

In the vast majority of cases, no. I use non-destructive entry techniques first — picking, decoding, bypassing — which leave no damage to the lock or door. Around 90% of lockouts I attend are resolved non-destructively. If non-destructive entry is not possible (for example, with certain high-security cylinders), I will explain this to you before doing anything and confirm the cost of a replacement cylinder. I never drill a lock without discussing it with you first. The replacement cylinder cost is quoted separately.
