Anti-Snap Locks Compared: Ultion, ABS, Yale Platinum, and Avocet MK3

Choosing an anti-snap lock can feel overwhelming. There are dozens of options, and the marketing from manufacturers doesn't always help you understand the real differences. So here's my honest, no-nonsense comparison of the four anti-snap cylinders I fit most often across [Coventry](/areas/coventry-city-centre).

I'm Ross, a local independent locksmith. I have no commercial arrangement with any of these manufacturers. I buy them all at trade prices and fit whichever one is right for the customer. This comparison is based on my own experience fitting and working with these locks daily.

The Contenders

1. Ultion

Security Rating: TS007 3-star (cylinder alone), Sold Secure Diamond (SS312), Secured by Design

Price Range: £90-130 fitted (depending on cylinder size)

Warranty: £2,000 break-in guarantee

The Ultion is the premium option and it earns that position. It's the only cylinder in this comparison that achieves TS007 3-star certification on its own — meaning the cylinder itself provides all three stars without needing additional security handles or escutcheons.

How it works: The Ultion has a lockdown mode. When an attack is detected, the internal mechanism locks the cam in place, preventing it from being turned even if the cylinder is compromised. It also has a hidden attack lock — an additional lock that engages when the key is removed, adding another layer of protection.

Key features:

  • 11-pin internal mechanism
  • Anti-snap, anti-pick, anti-bump, anti-drill
  • Molybdenum cam (extremely hard metal)
  • Sacrificial front section
  • Key card system for secure key cutting
  • Available in thumbturn and double cylinder
  • My take: The Ultion is the best euro cylinder on the market in my opinion. The £2,000 guarantee is backed by the manufacturer, and they do pay out. It's more expensive than the alternatives, but for a front door, I think the extra cost is justified. I fit more Ultions than anything else.

    2. Avocet ABS (Anti Bump & Snap)

Security Rating: TS007 3-star (with security handle), SS312 Diamond

    Price Range: £70-95 fitted

Warranty: Varies by model, typically 10 years

The Avocet ABS is excellent value. It's been on the market for years and has a proven track record. The "ABS" stands for Anti Bump and Snap — exactly what it says on the tin.

How it works: The ABS uses a patented snap-secure cylinder that breaks at a predetermined sacrificial point, leaving the core of the lock intact. The key is a dimple-cut design which provides very high pick resistance.

    Key features:

  • Snap-secure sacrificial break point
  • Anti-bump dimple key system
  • Anti-pick mushroom pins
  • Anti-drill hardened inserts
  • Key card for secure key duplication
  • Available in a range of finishes
  • My take: This is my go-to recommendation when customers want solid security without paying Ultion prices. It does require a security handle to achieve 3-star TS007 (see my [lock standards guide](/blog/ts007-vs-ss312-lock-standards)), but the cylinder itself is robust and well-engineered. I've fitted hundreds of these across Coventry with zero reported failures.

    3. Yale Platinum 3-Star

Security Rating: TS007 3-star (with security handle), Secured by Design

    Price Range: £65-85 fitted

    Warranty: 10 years

Yale is the brand most people recognise, and their Platinum range is their top-end euro cylinder. It's a competent anti-snap cylinder that benefits from Yale's extensive distribution network — parts and replacements are always available.

    Key features:

  • Anti-snap sacrificial section
  • Anti-bump, anti-pick, anti-drill
  • 6-pin mechanism
  • Nickel-plated finish
  • Standard dimple key
  • Part of the Yale Platinum door security range
  • My take: It's a solid product from a trusted brand. The 6-pin mechanism is fewer pins than the Ultion's 11, but that doesn't necessarily make it less secure in practice. Where the Yale Platinum falls slightly behind is in the detail — the build quality feels a step below the Ultion and ABS, and the key card system is less sophisticated. But it does the job well at a good price point.

    4. Avocet ABS MK3

Security Rating: TS007 3-star (with security handle), SS312 Diamond

    Price Range: £75-100 fitted

    Warranty: 10 years mechanical

The MK3 is the latest evolution of the Avocet ABS range. It builds on everything that made the original ABS good and adds refinements.

How it works: Same core anti-snap principle as the original ABS, with upgraded internals. The MK3 has improved anti-pick mechanisms and a more refined key system.

    Key features:

  • Third-generation snap protection
  • Enhanced anti-pick security pins
  • Improved key control system
  • Hardened anti-drill protection
  • Modular construction for easier servicing
  • Available in multiple finishes and sizes
  • My take: If you're choosing between the original ABS and the MK3, go for the MK3 — it's worth the small premium. The improvements are genuine, not just marketing. It's neck and neck with the Ultion on security, though it doesn't quite match the Ultion's lockdown feature or the standalone 3-star rating.

    Head-to-Head Comparison

Here's how they stack up across the key factors:

    Security Certification:

  • Ultion: TS007 3-star standalone — the only one that achieves this without additional hardware
  • ABS Avocet: TS007 3-star with security handle
  • Yale Platinum: TS007 3-star with security handle
  • ABS MK3: TS007 3-star with security handle
  • Anti-Snap Protection:

  • All four offer sacrificial break point protection — this is table stakes
  • Anti-Pick:

  • Ultion: 11-pin mechanism — excellent
  • ABS Avocet: Dimple key system — very good
  • Yale Platinum: 6-pin mechanism — good
  • ABS MK3: Enhanced security pins — very good
  • Key Security:

  • Ultion: Key card required for duplication, patented key blank
  • ABS Avocet: Key card system
  • Yale Platinum: Standard key card
  • ABS MK3: Improved key control system
  • Break-In Guarantee:

  • Ultion: £2,000 — the standout here
  • ABS Avocet: None standard
  • Yale Platinum: None
  • ABS MK3: None standard
  • Price (fitted by me in Coventry):

  • Ultion: £90-130
  • ABS Avocet: £70-95
  • Yale Platinum: £65-85
  • ABS MK3: £75-100
  • My Honest Recommendation

For a **front door**, I recommend the **Ultion**. It's the most secure, it has the best guarantee, and the standalone 3-star certification means you don't need to buy additional security handles. Yes, it costs more, but your front door is the primary entry point to your home.

For a **back door** or **side door**, the **Avocet ABS** or **ABS MK3** offers excellent security at a lower price. These doors are lower-risk and the savings make sense.

If you're on a tight budget, the **Yale Platinum** is a perfectly good anti-snap cylinder. It's infinitely better than whatever standard cylinder is currently on your door, and it comes from a brand with a solid support network.

What I wouldn't recommend: buying unbranded "anti-snap" cylinders from Amazon or eBay. The certification claims are often dubious, the build quality is poor, and you have no recourse if it fails. A lock is not the place to hunt for bargains.

    Getting the Right One Fitted

All four of these cylinders need to be the correct size for your door. The size varies depending on your door profile, handle position, and whether you want a thumbturn or double cylinder. I measure on-site and carry stock of the most common sizes for all four brands.

If you want to upgrade your euro cylinder, call me on 07735 336175. I'll recommend the right product for your door, your budget, and your security needs. I cover all areas of Coventry — from [Allesley](/areas/allesley) to [Wyken](/areas/wyken) — and most jobs are done in under 30 minutes.

    Frequently Asked Questions

Which anti-snap lock is the best value for money?

The Avocet ABS offers the best balance of security and price. It has proven anti-snap protection, a solid track record, and costs less than the Ultion. For a front door where you want the best possible protection, the Ultion is worth the premium, but for back doors or budget-conscious upgrades the ABS is excellent.

Do I need a security handle as well as an anti-snap cylinder?

To achieve TS007 3-star certification on most cylinders, yes. The Ultion is the exception as it achieves 3-star on its own. For the Avocet ABS, Yale Platinum, and ABS MK3, you need a 1-star cylinder combined with a 2-star handle, or a 2-star cylinder with a 1-star handle, to reach the 3-star total. I can advise on the best combination for your door.

How long does an anti-snap cylinder last?

A quality anti-snap cylinder from any of the brands covered here should last 10 to 15 years with normal use. Cheaper cylinders may wear faster, especially if exposed to weather. If your key starts becoming stiff or difficult to turn, it is time to consider a replacement rather than waiting for the lock to fail completely.

Can I upgrade to an anti-snap cylinder without changing my door handles?

Yes, in most cases. The anti-snap cylinder replaces only the barrel inside your existing lock mechanism. Your handles, multipoint lock, and door furniture can usually stay as they are. The exception is if you want to achieve full 3-star TS007 certification, which may require a security-rated handle as well.
